To help teens avoid the trap of drinking and smoking to be cool you need to combine education, support and positive role modelling. Start by educating them about the health risks and long term consequences of these habits. Open and honest conversations about peer pressure and the importance of making their own decisions are key. Help them build self esteem and confidence through activities they are interested in and challenged by so they can resist the temptation to conform to bad behaviour. Surround them with positive role models, whether through family, mentors or community programs who live healthy lifestyles. Create an environment where teens feel heard and understood and they will need to seek validation through risky behaviour less. By open communication, self worth and a strong support system teens will make choices that protect their well being and future. Show them a balanced life and a listening ear and they’ll feel valued and less likely to seek validation in harmful ways. Education, open conversation and strong support will help them make better choices for their future.
