With the advent of technology, I believe social media plays a huge role in impacting our daily life choices. During the period of adolescence, it is effortless for budding minds to get distracted and get into malpractices. Peer pressure can help the teen focus on his aspirations or get him involved in the wrongdoings. The daunting challenge here is the fact that it becomes arduous for the child to come out of these things once he has been addicted to them.
Firstly, it is quintessential for parents to understand their roles in guiding a child. In our stereotypical society, talking to a child about so-called taboo topics like smoking and drinking seems uncomfortable to the parents and thus, they avoid it. It is high time that parents realize their duty and educate their children about the disadvantages of getting addicted to these substances. By educating teens on such topics, they tend to trust their parents a lot more.
Secondly, teens must realize that looking cool in front of their social groups is not going to enhance their individual growth in any way. By following the ongoing trends blindly, they will only paint a fake picture of themselves in the real world.
Hence, I believe that if the aforementioned steps are taken care of, teens will be able to navigate their paths.
To help teens avoid the trap of drinking and smoking to be cool you need to combine education, support and positive role modelling. Start by educating them about the health risks and long term consequences of these habits. Open and honest conversations about peer pressure and the importance of making their own decisions are key. Help them build self esteem and confidence through activities they are interested in and challenged by so they can resist the temptation to conform to bad behaviour. Surround them with positive role models, whether through family, mentors or community programs who live healthy lifestyles. Create an environment where teens feel heard and understood and they will need to seek validation through risky behaviour less. By open communication, self worth and a strong support system teens will make choices that protect their well being and future. Show them a balanced life and a listening ear and they’ll feel valued and less likely to seek validation in harmful ways. Education, open conversation and strong support will help them make better choices for their future.
