Structure of the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple. It consists of two lobes connected by a thin tissue called the isthmus. The gland is made up of follicles filled with a substance called colloid, which contains thyroglobulin, a protein that stores thyroid hormones.

Hormones Produced

The thyroid gland produces two main hormones:

1. Thyroxine (T4):
   • Function: T4 is responsible for regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall growth.
   • Example: Higher levels of T4 can lead to increased energy and metabolic rate.
2. Triiodothyronine (T3):
   • Function: T3 is more active than T4 and affects nearly every cell in the body.
