There is a Mayer and Salovey Model in which they describe four different areas of Emotional Intelligence. They are as follows:-

There are different ways to practice Emotional Intelligence. a few of them are:-

Change of mindset with time is the most accurate answer regarding healing. Time does not signify the ability of a person to overcome pain, grief, or any sort of trauma. If a person is stuck on the same loop of thoughts fueled with negativeness then the time or the current mindset of that person is of no use moving forward. Actions are necessary to overcome something that caused you trauma. One could wait for years to think that time would heal everything but it’s tricky when your mind isn’t ready to let go of your situation and to think you are getting better, it just gets worse. The ability to heal of a person lies in their mind as to how they think and work in a situation to get out of their experience. Support from loved ones gives a person the strength to make necessary changes in their routine and to develop a coping mechanism in their mind over time to handle the situation rather than waiting for it to change for them. So to answer the question, time is necessary for acceptance but that does not guarantee an outcome and without taking appropriate time to duel over the situation, shifting from one pace of mindset to another does not mean that the situation is changed. Thus, a change of mindset filled with positive mechanisms that develop over time can help a person heal from traumatic incidents.

It’s a hard situation, it is very much understandable and as you said it’s a tough time for them so you have to give them their space, which does actually give you a little bit of a time and to completely leave them is a bit hard and bitter in a way as they are you loved ones.
It’s like you can’t leave them totally because that might not be a dilemma the future you might want to be in.
Give them and yourself the time help them through out of the tough time they are going through and see how it goes afterwards because we all know tough times do change people, may it be in a good way or a bad way.
But as for during the situation right now, and take a break when it takes too much of a toll on you and be back, as this might be the time they want you the most and this could take your relationship with them to the next step.

Also if it’s about social issues then content creation could be used as a good opportunity to arouse awareness among people. But I feel that not necessarily all the students would be interested in content creation , since we all are a mixed and a unique combination of emotions and talents, so I think rather than making it as a subject, it’s better to make clubs so that those who are interested can be a part of it.
