To understand the answer to this question we need to understand societal changes that have occurred over years. It is not just the sudden need for psychology which has increased over time, it is also the awareness that has increased multifold. Thanks to social media the awareness for mental well-being has increased, leading people to seek help from mental health specialists. However, the trends do suggest a significant rise in rates of people seeking mental health help, leading to worldwide tension. Attributing a single cause to it might be redundant but many factors including social media, environmental changes, and societal changes do contribute to the deterioration of mental health in today’s world.
Today’s youth need therapy more than in the 90s due to several significant changes in their environment and lifestyle. The rise of social media has created a platform for constant comparison, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem among young people. Cyber bullying has become a prevalent issue, causing emotional trauma and mental health issues that were less common before the digital age.
Changes in family structure, such as higher rates of divorce and single-parent households, can also contribute to emotional instability and a lack of support for many young people. Additionally, the decline in physical activity due to sedentary lifestyles and increased screen time has negatively impacted mental health. Physical activity is known to release endorphins and reduce stress, and its absence can lead to higher levels of anxiety and depression.
Furthermore, academic and social pressures have intensified, with youth feeling the need to excel in a highly competitive environment. These combined factors create a perfect storm of stressors that heighten the need for therapy among today’s youth. Therapy provides a crucial outlet for young people to process their emotions, develop coping strategies, and receive the support they need to navigate these challenges effectively.
Finally, the youth today are more vocal about their mental health struggles. They prioritize mental well-being and are more willing to seek professional help. This proactive attitude, combined with the aforementioned factors, has led to a higher demand for therapy among today’s youth.
