Women of today’s world are seeking for good opportunities that aligns well with their knowledge and talent, but somewhere down the lane we find women struggling to maintain a positive work life balance, not because she is incapable of it but because the societal expectations demand debatable chores solely from a woman’s end and not man’s. Often times women are subjected to choose compromise a career for their family. A women is expected to think of a career as a time pass and not a need, but from a practical point of view- financial independence is an unbiased need that doesn’t depend on gender. Every individual has equal rights and needs to be financially independent and choose their opinionated field of work.
Organizational cultures and practices that are deeply connected with systemic gender bias are, in my opinion, one of the biggest obstacles women face in their quest for gender equality in the workplace today. Despite official rules that promote equal opportunity, this bias presents itself in a variety of covert and overt ways, sustaining inequality.
First, judgments about hiring and promotion are influenced by gender bias. According to studies, similar resumes are frequently assessed differently depending on whether a male or female name is included, indicating implicit biases that favor men. This prejudice also affects performance reviews, where women can get harsher criticism or be perceived as less capable of taking on leadership roles, which would limit their chances of progress.
Second, when it comes to work-life balance in particular, organizational structures and procedures frequently fail to take into account the realities of women’s lives. Women who shoulder a disproportionate amount of caregiving obligations may be at a disadvantage due to traditional expectations of long hours and strict scheduling. Women may choose to forego possibilities for work advancement as a result, or they may suffer consequences like frozen career advancement.
Thirdly, despite legal safeguards, salary disparity still exists. Due to a variety of variables, including as occupational segregation, the devaluation of “female-dominated” industries, and negotiation biases, women are still paid less than males on average for work of equivalent quality. In addition to reflecting economic injustice, this salary disparity also upholds more general disparities in wealth accumulation and economic independence.
To overcome these obstacles, comprehensive approaches are needed, such as encouraging inclusive leadership, putting flexible work schedules into place, and holding frequent bias education sessions. In addition, reducing the wage gap requires developing a culture of responsibility and openness in pay processes. In order to establish environments where all people, regardless of gender, may prosper and develop based on their merits and skills, it is ultimately necessary to challenge deeply ingrained biases and reimagine organizational norms in order to achieve gender equality in the workplace.
Talking about the most significant barrier for women at their workplaces, ‘lack of opportunities for career advancement’ is something we still need to address with great detail.
As it is said, “Address the root cause and not just the symptoms“, we need to trace down toward the root cause of WHY women are lacking to avail the better opportunities for themselves. Is it the societal conditioning for asking less for ourselves, or is it something to deal with the required courage to desire the best possible?
Think of it as, when there’s pain in any particular body part, it is not mandatory that to operate that part of body only. Because pain is just a symptom and not the root cause. To find the root cause, we get it tested thoroughly and carefully so that we can address it efficiently.
So in a nutshell, whether it’s lack of opportunities for career advancement or any other from the mentioned, these all are mere symptoms while the root cause is the “mindset” of a whole society and not the gender-specific individuals.
I think the most common obstacle a woman faces in a work place is to be treated equally as men. Although, the difference has decreased upto an extent but till now women are seen less capable of men. Even if a woman has potential to do a job, in most of the workplaces, they are not assigned with the work thinking they would not be able to complete it. Women are generally marked as a group which can handle less pressurised work but the irony is they are ones who handles everything with just a smile on their face.
In today’s world women are doing everything what men do even better but in some places women are still believed that they are the weaker section.
Gender equality is something we all have to work together. In this generation also if we are still talking about gender equality then there is something we need to work together. Women are equally potent and capable of doing every work a man can do in every sector.
