Earth’s constantly moving tectonic plates cause most earthquakes. As these giant slabs grind, get stuck, or collide, pressure builds up at their edges. When the pressure becomes extreme, the plates break free, releasing energy as an earthquake. Different plate boundaries (collision zones, spreading zones, or sliding zones) create areas prone to specific types of earthquakes.
