Women entrepreneurs face several challenges, including limited access to funding, gender bias, lack of mentorship, and work-life balance pressures. Differences in funding are prevalent, with women receiving a small fraction of capital compared to men. Gender bias often results in women being underestimated and overlooked in business environments. Additionally, there is a lack of female mentors and role models which makes it difficult for women to find guidance and support. Balancing work with family responsibilities further complicates their journey.
Modernisation is helping women to become successful entrepreneurs but still they face major challenges which sets them back. There is a need for immediate attention so that we are able to create a gender neutral environment for today and for upcoming generations.
The major challenges faced by the women in the highly competitive business world are discrimination, prejudice, stereotype attitude. Women are expected to manage both household chores and the business which affect them physically, mentally and emotionally. Social norms, lack of financial support decreases their work capacity and affect their confidence adversely. Gender inequality, pay gaps, lack of support from the family exaggerates the problem. Even if the women are highly educated and talented they are not allowed to work due to family pressure and conservative mindset.
There is a need of stringent policies and regulations that restricts discrimination in the workplace. A multifaceted approach is required which helps to promote equality and support to the women in the workplace. A friendly work environment, support from the government will help them to become successful. The awareness should be started from the elementary level. Women should be trained and given opportunity to expand. The support from the society, change in the mindset will help women to succeed.
Women face problems in general and the women entrepreneurs are not an exception to it. They also face problems like glass ceiling, a concept where she is shown as growing and achieving but in reality unfortunately some men do not lead them attain success and they end up in a mediocre position, sexual harassment, which has now fortunately reduced due to various interventions like POSH trainings, various acts like Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, Disha guidelines, Nirbhaya fund and a lot of awareness created after the Nirbhaya incident.
Policies that can support deduction in gender gap and progress of women at workplace are like Bhartiya Mahila Bank which provides collateral free loans up to 1 crore for micro and small enterprises and bigger loans at very reasonable interest rates to women lead manufacturing units, PradhanMantri Mudra Yojana which caters to under privileged micro and small enterprises, Standup India for SC, ST and women borrowers, Mahila e Haat for women borrowers, Stree Shakti personal loans of up to rupees 50 lakhs.
Because of all these steps and a positive mental attitude of both men and women are wemen entrepreneurs can get the dignified life they aspire for.
