Social media use for youngsters under the age of sixteen is not, in my opinion, safe. Instead of adults, teens and young adolescents are the ones who are actually using social media sites like YouTube, Snapchat, tiktok, and Instagram to create reels.
Following the pandemic, kids are now spending more time on screens and social media across a variety of social media platforms. The youngsters can be seen using their phones and iPads more often than playing outside or engaging in physical activity. Kids are becoming less interested in reading and interacting with others and more into creating reels and tiktok. Although these networks appear to be enjoyable and engaging, many social media applications are not meant for younger users.
Exposure of these children to such platforms is not healthy. There are lots of misinformation out there that could have adverse consequences. Children are growing becoming more distant from reality as a result of these platforms. Children become lethargic due to disruptions in their sleep cycle, which disrupts family time.
Also, it’s been observed that kids who take advantage of these social media platforms are becoming anxious, dissatisfied, self-conscious of their physical beings, and also having trouble sleeping.
If not addressed, these conditions may result in serious health complications. It is imperative that the age at which these apps are used be delayed. In addition to monitoring their account, parents should provide them instructions for usage.
Strive to create in them a healthy lifestyle that will make them eager to explore the outdoors. Encourage it with anything that piques the desire in them. Children who are content, confident, and feel good about themselves are better equipped to face the outside world.
NO, Children less than 14 and even those who are 15, 16 shouldn’t have their own social media accounts specifically like Instagram because the apparent reason is the exposure. When you are scrolling a reel or a video you don’t know what’s next, in such case any content which is inappropriate as per their age, then it may either be psychologically detrimental as child psychology is deep and unpredictable or it may cast bad influence on them. Children’s are curious if they even get a glance of something which they are oblivious about, they would try their best to know about it. There’s no denying to fact that social media have impact, and how it impacts one mind specially young minds is important to know…
Take an instance: There are videos where wrong messages are delivered but are presented with tune full, energizing background music which makes it look cool or there are videos with explicit content. This kind of content has disturbing effect on minds. Other issues are those predators with bad intentions sitting behind the screen, faceless who prey on people with their manipulative and gullible tricks.
If there’s a case where social media is good to be used for children then it should be used under parent’s supervision or with parental controls.
Procrastination and social media is something which has been increasingly intertwined in our present modern life, it serves as a challenge for the young generation. Social media, while providing valuable tools for communication and information sharing, can also serve as a major source of distraction. These days students find it very difficult to get their attention out of social media and study. The easy access to social media makes it easy to disrupt focus and switch tasks. For many more reason i oppose the idea of children less than the age of 14 to have their own personal social media account. A 14 year child’s brain require creative ideas and decision making skills and being on social media disrupts all these natural ability which disrupts the child’s brain to think more. More over it has been proven that usage of social media has been linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in teenagers as they constantly compare themselves with their peer’s and their unavailability of a particular thing. Cyberbullying is also a topic towards which children of this age are very vulnerable to. Social media usage leads to decrease in face to face communication or interaction with their peers which also disrupt their very essential and required interpersonal skills and wont develop emotional intelligence. Social media also acts as a significant distraction from schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and other important aspects of adolescent development. In conclusion children of this age are vulnerable to the horror’s of social media and since they are the leading future generation , we must protect them from social media for all the above mentioned points.
