Social media algorithms have a big impact on what we see, sometimes making misinformation spread really fast. Imagine you’re scrolling through your feed and all you see are posts that agree with what you already think. That’s like being in a bubble where you don’t hear different opinions.
For example, if you like or comment on posts about a controversial topic, the algorithm might show you even more of the same kind of posts. This can make it hard to see a balanced view.
Also, these algorithms like things that get lots of likes or shares, even if they’re not true. So, a fake news story that’s shocking might get shared a lot before anyone checks if it’s true.
To fix this, social media could use tools to check if posts are true before they spread too far. They could also show a mix of different opinions to break the bubble effect. Teaching people how to spot fake news and encouraging them to think before sharing would also help.
