Urban Heat Islands (UHI) are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. Structures such as buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat more than natural landscapes such as forests and water bodies. Urban areas, where these structures are highly concentrated and greenery is limited, become “islands” of higher temperatures relative to outlying areas. It increases the demand for energy, leads to increased greenhouse gases emissions, discomforts human health and even affects the health of flora and funa. The major factors responsible for UHI
Measures that can be taken to countering UHIS:
Activities to reduce heat islands range from voluntary initiatives, such as cool pavement demonstration projects, to policy actions, such as requiring cool roofs via building codes. Most mitigation activities have multiple benefits, including cleaner air, improved human health and comfort, reduced energy costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Heat island mitigation can also help cities reduce the impacts of climate change.
Areas within cities with mostly concrete big buildings and less vegetation, which experience significantly higher temperatures compared to their surrounding rural areas are called heat Islands.
Causes:
1. Lack of greenery- reduces shade and cooling of surroundings.
2. Building material and dark color of buildings absorb more sunlight and reflect less.
3. Poor urban planning: Hindrance in air circulation because of big buildings and narrow streets which restrict natural cooling.
Measures:
1. Urban planning: Broad streets with better water infiltration techniques & reducing surface runoff result in better circulation of air and less heating.
2. Green spaces: Planting trees, creating more parks, which increase shaded areas and reflect more sunlight.
3. Roofs & terraces should be painted white to reflect more heat.
4. Implement programs like Ahmedabad’s cool roof program which offers affordable solutions for urban heat islands and Green building code.
However, To prevent the creation of more buildings and reduce the heat island effect, the government must run awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, offices, and on social media platforms through ads. Additionally, they should plant more trees and create more parks.

Urban heat island is a phenomenon wherein the urban areas experience an extreme increase in temperature compared to the surrounding rural and suburban areas. This effect is most commonly found in metropolitan cities of India such as Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and so on.
REASONS FOR URBAN HEAT ISLAND
There are various factors that causes urban heat island effect, among them the primary factors are:
The primary cause of this urban heat island is due to cutting down of trees for the sake of urbanization. Growing population causes increase in demands in various aspects such as shelter, primary health care facilities, transportation network and so on. As a result Deforestation takes place to meet the human needs. Trees take in atmospheric Carbon-di-oxide and release oxygen. Cutting down of trees, releases the stored carbon which in turn significantly increases the global temperature as carbon-di-oxide is one among the primary greenhouse gases.
Urban areas have huge amount of transportation usage compared to rural areas. These vehicles, during combustion of fuels, emit greenhouse gases such as Sulphur-di-oxide, carbon-di-oxide, carbon mono-oxide. These gases get trapped in the atmosphere thereby causing the urban area to experience higher temperature.
Apart from the above-mentioned factors, there are also other reasons that causes heat island such as concrete materials which instead of reflecting, absorbs and retain the heat.
MEASURES
Also use of bicycles, switching off electrical appliances when not is use and proper awareness to public through campaigns can help to reduce the carbon footprints which thereby reduced the heat island effect in urban areas
