We live in a society where in public, we talk about women’s empowerment and how to support women, but in our own homes, we do not allow them to stay late outside at night or get into their field of interest. Is it okay to do so? What are your opinions?
Encouraging open conversations within families encouraging women to work will be transformative on their lives.
“In order to carry positive actions we must here develop positive vision” – Dalai Lama. This quote perfectly fits the situation of women in our society, we have developed idea of women empowerment, started talking about it but when it comes to action, we lack.
In respect to your question, everyone should have right to choose their field of interest, should have freedom, freedom of going out whenever they want irrespective of day and night.
We have lived in patriarchy society for a very long period of time and that has shaped our mentality in the manner where the idea of free and equal women cannot be digested by all. It is deeply rooted in our families, society, everywhere. We talk about women empowerment, we buy the idea of equality but when it comes to equal treatment, cerebral opportunity, we couldn’t stand it. That is why women face problem of allowance and choice.
Slowly and surely changes are coming. Someday women wouldn’t face problem of allowance, freedom of choice and from that day 0nwards everyday would be Women’s Empowerment Day and each little stand of every women would be worth it.
First and most importantly, no. It is not okay or justifiable by any means.
If we trace the evolution of gender roles in society we’ll observe that there was a point in history when men and women were equals, women were scholars, artisans, philosophers, etc. We cannot pinpoint a certain event when women started being treated as inferior.
The belief that humankind has today, is that society is inherently patriarchal. This belief at present may not be blatantly obvious. But it can be seen in instances like the one you mentioned.
There has been some positive development in the perception of traditional gender roles in our country, but we are still a ways behind the idealistic reality we all chase.
The hope is, that one day men will be taught again to protect women and not harm them. And that women feel safe no matter the time or place because basic respect and decency should be the same for all persons regardless of gender, sexuality, caste, race, or any other category where differences may arise.
Hope this answers your question.
