I usually handle criticism and feedback with a positive mindset. Deep down, if I feel that they’re right, I make necessary changes, because that helps me enhance my skills and provides an opportunity to refine my work.
It is absolutely true that handling criticism and feedback effectively can provide important skills for personal and professional growth.
For instance, during an assignment period in my college, my professor pointed out that my team was lacking in sales. Initially I was really angry and felt humiliated because I was expecting an appreciation but not criticism. But later, we have realised that our professor was right after all. By considering his feedback, my team and I made certain changes in advertising and sales & production force management which increased our sales significantly, making us the team with the highest number of sales in that quarter. We were finally one of the best of the best teams. This has also made my team and I more confident and less insecure. This made me realise that accepting our mistakes and being open minded and makes us better people, personally and professionally. Being egoistic and self centred gets us nowhere.
Nevertheless, in a few cases, if I don’t get convinced that I’m wrong or there’s room for correction in my work, I just let it go. Because at the end of the day, my actions have to satisfy me. So it all comes down to our individual selves and instincts.
Criticism should always be taken constructively as it plays a vital role in ones development. Contrary to what most people believe, I do not see constructive criticism as a negative feedback but a chance to learn and develop from it. While receiving feedback, I strive to critically analyze them, and where possible, incorporate them appropriately.
An occasion where constructive criticism was instrumental in enhancing my work was during the preparation of a film appreciation programme for Filmsutra. Being an event manager, I had planned the event schedule well in advance and had chosen the best films that I thought would be appreciated. However, after sharing the plan with the team, I got some feedback that though the films selected are diverse, there are no works of independent and less known filmmakers, which is one of the guiding principles of Filmsutra.
At first, I got offended by what I was hearing but I came to realize that what was being said was correct. To solve this, I considered the film list again and researched more on other independent and new filmmakers. I then proceeded to create a new list of movies that consisted of classics that were beloved by the public as well as movies that were not mainstream but provoking. I also ensured that the team was engaged in the decision making process for the purpose of getting more ideas.
When we hosted the event, the new film lineup was very successful among the audience. Not only was the goal of reaching out to more people accomplished, but it also encouraged conversation and appreciation for the hidden gem films. This experience was very valuable for me because I understood the need to incorporate the organizational values into the events and the significance of diversity in decision making.
This constructive criticism not only enriched our event with his suggestion but also developed me as the event manager. It reiterated the need to always remain teachable to ensure that there is constant room for growth and learning. I have learned the importance of constructive criticism to make me better in organizing events that our audience will appreciate and compliment the filmsutra values.
Handling criticism and feedback is crucial for my growth. I approach it with an open mind, viewing it as an opportunity rather than a personal attack. By separating emotions from the constructive aspects, I focus on the specific points for improvement.
For instance, during a project review, feedback highlighted areas where I could improve my communication with non-technical team members. Initially defensive, I reflected on the feedback and identified ways to enhance clarity and simplify explanations. Implementing these changes, such as preparing key points in advance and using simpler language, significantly improved how my ideas were understood and received.
This experience taught me the value of constructive criticism in personal development. It reinforced the importance of listening actively, assessing feedback objectively, and taking proactive steps to grow professionally. Ultimately, handling criticism positively not only enhances my skills but also strengthens relationships and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.
