A fissure eruption of a volcano is when magma moves through long cracks in the Earth’s crust instead of erupting from a central vent, which allows lava flows instead. It is generally less explosive. Found in Iceland, East African Rift and Columbia Plateau, USA.
Definition: A fissure volcanic eruption occurs when magma escapes through long cracks (fissures) in the Earth’s surface rather than from a single volcanic cone.
Regions of Occurrence
These regions experience frequent volcanic activity due to tectonic movements.
