The two-factor theory (also known as Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory and dual-factor theory) states that there are certain factors in the workplace that cause job satisfaction while a separate set of factors cause dissatisfaction, all of which act independently of each other.
The two-factor theory, proposed by Frederick Herzberg, identifies hygiene factors (e.g., salary, work conditions) that prevent dissatisfaction and motivators (e.g., achievement, recognition) that enhance job satisfaction. Effective motivation requires addressing both factors, as hygiene alone does not lead to true motivation or fulfillment in the workplace.
