World-Appearance According to Acharya Shankara

Introduction

• Acharya Shankara, a prominent philosopher, introduced the concept of “world-appearance” in his interpretation of Advaita Vedanta. He explained that the world, as we experience it, is not the ultimate reality but an illusion, much like a dream.

World as Maya (Illusion)

• Shankara believed that the world is a product of Maya, which means illusion. This illusion prevents us from seeing the truth: that the ultimate reality is Brahman, the absolute, unchanging, and infinite consciousness.
• He illustrated this with the example of a rope and a snake. In the dark, a person might mistake a rope for a snake, which exists only in the mind, but once the light is on, the illusion vanishes.

Perception and Reality

• According to Shankara, human perception distorts reality. We interpret the world through our senses, but these are unreliable. What we see as diverse objects and experiences are all forms of Brahman, which is beyond individual perception.
