The Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house, consists of members elected through a system of indirect elections. Each state legislature elects its representatives using a single transferable vote system, ensuring proportional representation. Members serve staggered six-year terms, with one-third of the house retiring every two years. Additionally, the President nominates 12 members with special knowledge in fields like art, literature, and social service. The total strength of the Rajya Sabha is 250, with 238 elected and 12 nominated members. Elections are conducted by the Election Commission of India, ensuring a fair and democratic process.
