The Rohingya situation has put considerable pressure on the relationship between India and Bangladesh, primarily due to the surge of refugees entering both nations. Initially regarded as a refuge, India has become increasingly cautious about the security and economic challenges associated with accommodating a large group of refugees. Meanwhile, Bangladesh, which is already grappling with more than a million Rohingya individuals, has been seeking additional assistance from India, its larger neighbor. India’s hesitance to offer significant support, coupled with its emphasis on repatriating refugees, has led to tensions. Moreover, India’s decision to send some Rohingya back to Myanmar, in spite of international backlash, has further complicated the relationship between the two countries. As they move forward, both nations are attempting to strike a fragile balance between their humanitarian responsibilities and national interests, which is impacting their strategic alliance.
