Adaptive or active immunity occurs when the immune system produces antibodies in response to a germ or vaccine, providing long-term protection. Passive immunity, however, develops when antibodies switch from one person to another, as in maternal antibodies or immunoglobulin remedy, which present rapid however short-term safety.
