The revolt of 1857 marks a turning point in the history of India. It led to far reaching changes in the system of administration and the policies of the British government.

Some of the reason which led to failure of the revolt-:

1. All India participation as absent- Limited territorial spread was one factor. The eastern,southern and western parts of India remained more or less unaffected
2. All classes did not join- Big zamindars acted as break water to storm.Money lenders and merchants suffered the wrath of the mutineers badly and saw their interests better protected under British patronage. Educated Indians viewed this revolt as backward looking. Most Indian rulers refused to join, and often gave active hl to British.
3. Ideology Problems- Mutineers lacked a clear understanding of colonial rule. Modern nationalism was as yet unknown in India.
4. Poor Arms and equipment- Indian soldiers were fighting with sword and spears and less of guns and muskets while Europeans were equipped with the latest weapons.
5. Poorly Organised- There was no coordination or central leadership. Tantia Tope, Laxmibai, Kunwar Singh etc were no match to their British opponents in generalship.

Though 1857 revolt had many shotcomings but it showed shortcomings in the Company’s administration and its army. It had major influence on the course of the struggle for freedom.
