Self-awareness, which encompasses the person’s cognitive and affective processes as well as forms of behaviour, is generally considered one of the primary values in such processes as a person’s development and their subjective experience. It is a skill that helps each person to be educated of itself, to develop caring relationships and to effectively cope with life’s problems.
The condition of possessing high levels of Self-awareness has social assets and liabilities. Positive aspect, first, self-awareness on the emotional intelligence development which helps to cover emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. Based on the levels of self-awareness people are more likely to be sympathetic, embracing change and able to cope with stress. It means that they can establish achievable objectives and struggle for them knowing their strengths and weaknesses.
However, self-awareness has positive consequences to some extent but when it becomes excessive then it is disadvantageous. It can lead to over-thinking whereby a person gets very hard on himself leading to less confident person or a person full of doubts. Thus, for example, persons who have a high level of conscientiousness in social situations can become self-conscious and do not know how to behave properly.
Therefore, it is safe to assume that self-awareness is for the most part helpful, however, moderation is necessary. While excessive self-consciousness breeds negativity, creating a poor image about one’s self and undue stress, moderate self-consciousness in a positive manner is beneficial for personal development and mental health.
