Being too much self-aware can have both positive and negative sides. Let’s explore both aspects:

It is a skill that helps each person to be educated of itself, to develop caring relationships and to effectively cope with life’s problems.
The condition of possessing high levels of Self-awareness has social assets and liabilities. Positive aspect, first, self-awareness on the emotional intelligence development which helps to cover emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. Based on the levels of self-awareness people are more likely to be sympathetic, embracing change and able to cope with stress. It means that they can establish achievable objectives and struggle for them knowing their strengths and weaknesses.
However, self-awareness has positive consequences to some extent but when it becomes excessive then it is disadvantageous. It can lead to over-thinking whereby a person gets very hard on himself leading to less confident person or a person full of doubts. Thus, for example, persons who have a high level of conscientiousness in social situations can become self-conscious and do not know how to behave properly.
Therefore, it is safe to assume that self-awareness is for the most part helpful, however, moderation is necessary. While excessive self-consciousness breeds negativity, creating a poor image about one’s self and undue stress, moderate self-consciousness in a positive manner is beneficial for personal development and mental health.

This may cause hyper-fixation on certain thoughts and feelings, leading to a state of constant self-evaluation. The person may become more and more self-conscious and this may lead to second guessing every decision – causing the person to have low self-esteem. In extreme cases, this may lead to social anxiety or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) tendencies or even lead to narcissistic behaviours, neglecting the needs and perspectives of others.
however on the positive side, self-awareness enhances personal growth, builds strong empathy and compassion, which also leads to better and stronger relationships, and better decision-making skills. When we understand our own emotions, motivations and actions, we tend to navigate social interactions more effectively, while understanding where the other person is coming from emotionally and mentally. This evolved self-understanding helps improve mental health, as one can recognize his/her weakness and strengths, and harbor the ways to tackle unwanted emotions and beheviours and pacify stressors before they become overwhelming.
While self-awarness is importance for personal growth and one’s emotional intelligence, maintaining balance is essential. As we know, excessive of everything is bad – even the best of best things harm us if done in extremes. For a healthy level of self-awareness, one must be reflective and not self-absorbed, and that is a key to everything for a fulfilling and harmonious life.
