The Government of India designates titles to define its heritage and identity. The Royal Bengal Tiger has been designated as the national animal, the Indian Peacock as national bird and the Lotus as national flower.
Similar titles have been attributed to the sport of hockey, given the honour it has brought to India. The period between 1928 and 1956, famously dubbed as the Golden Era of Indian Hockey, witnessed the homecoming of 6 consecutive Olympic wins. Now with 8 titles to its name, India has been the most successful side in the sport.
Although India has won the title a record 8 times, Hockey hasn’t officially been declared the national sport. The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports asserts that the Government of India encourages all sport disciplines, regardless of popularity.
Till the time the government officially designates a national sport, calling Hockey one is a misnomer.
