Do you think being too much self aware is a good thing or can it also have negative sides?

In psychology, Self-Awareness is defined as the conscious knowledge of one’s own feelings, thoughts, emotions and actions. It involves one’s realization of distinctness as a n individual from other individuals and understanding how one’s personal choices, values and beliefs shape and align with their day-to-day actions. While being self-aware shapes you as an individual and helps you be more empathetic and decisive, it also acts as a double-edged sword. Like every coin has two side, self-awareness also has two sides that need to be considered – one being the positive side, and the other being the negative side.
Self-awareness can often times lead to over analyzing one’s thoughts and actions, which can lead to self-consciousness, anxiety and a tendency to overthink. This may cause hyper-fixation on certain thoughts and feelings, leading to a state of constant self-evaluation. The person may become more and more self-conscious and this may lead to second guessing every decision – causing the person to have low self-esteem. In extreme cases, this may lead to social anxiety or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) tendencies or even lead to narcissistic behaviours, neglecting the needs and perspectives of others.
however on the positive side, self-awareness enhances personal growth, builds strong empathy and compassion, which also leads to better and stronger relationships, and better decision-making skills. When we understand our own emotions, motivations and actions, we tend to navigate social interactions more effectively, while understanding where the other person is coming from emotionally and mentally. This evolved self-understanding helps improve mental health, as one can recognize his/her weakness and strengths, and harbor the ways to tackle unwanted emotions and beheviours and pacify stressors before they become overwhelming.
While self-awarness is importance for personal growth and one’s emotional intelligence, maintaining balance is essential. As we know, excessive of everything is bad – even the best of best things harm us if done in extremes. For a healthy level of self-awareness, one must be reflective and not self-absorbed, and that is a key to everything for a fulfilling and harmonious life.

Let’s talk about what exactly genome editing is. Genome editing involves altering the DNA of an organism to add, remove, or modify genetic material. Techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 have revolutionized this field, which allows us to modify genes precisely and efficiently. These techniques have potential applications in medicine, agriculture, and research, such as genetic disorder correction, improvement of crop resistance to diseases, and studying gene functions.
Even though this is a revolutionary invention, ethical concerns arise with genome editing. One of the major issues is the potential to create unwanted consequences, such as off-target effects, where in parts of the genome that are not supposed to be affected are altered, which may further lead to other health complications – which might be known or completely new.
While these technologies require are highly skilled individuals, and only affordable by the rich community of the society, this will not only lead to making economic inequities wider, at the same time create genetic inequities, leading to another unwanted division in the society.
Another major concern is the use of genome editing in human embryos which can lead to heritable genetic changes. This raises questions about legal consent – as the future generations cannot consent to these modifications. This essentially violates their right to freedom of speech and expression and right to protection of life and liberty. Moreover, there’s fear of “designer babies” where the genetic traits are edited to parents’ choice for non-medical reasons, which will lead to loss of genetic diversity and new forms of discrimination.
While genome editing is a promising and innovative idea for a better future, it requires careful consideration of its ethical implications, strict regulation and essential education about it to the general public.
