Sugar industry in India with exception of J&K, HP in North and Eastern States is primarily distributed in Northern States (U.P, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana) and Southern States (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana).
Traditionally Northern States were main hub due to it’s fertile soil & ample land availability for sugar cane plantation; However, due to climatic conditions it’s harvest season is short & result in low output. Southern States, with their tropical climate have long harvest season & high sugar output, thereby, emerging as competitive hub.
The shift however is not only due to the favorable climatic conditions due also due to:
1) Proper implementation of governmental policies like Ethanol Blending Policy (EBP), Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sichayee Yojana (PMKSY), subsidiaries under Sugar Development Fund (SDF) for implementation of advanced technologies.
2) Modern & Co-Operative managed infrastructure and well managed mills.
3) Better water management system.
These factors led to the shift of Sugar Industries from traditional North to modern Southern mills & management.
