Recently, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched three satellites using its newly developed launch vehicle called Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). The SSLV is ISRO’s third and smallest launch vehicle after the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The SSLV is a 3-stage vehicle with three solid propulsion stages and liquid propulsion based Velocity Trimming Module as a terminal stage.
Benefits of the SSLV:
Significance of the SSLV for ISRO in the coming years:
ISRO has been a reliable and cost effective space agency and the launch of new SSLV adds to this capability. The SSLV will play an important role with regard to commercial space launches.
This new type of rocket truly puts the ‘Small’ in Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, or SSLV as it has been developed by ISRO. To analogize the strategic evolution of 10-Ks, it is as if you have swiftly and efficiently developed a lean, mean workhorse for your space launches. Here’s why it’s so exciting:
Launching on a budget: The creation of the SSLV reduce the cost of launch and make space available for universities, start-ups as well as small organizations. This creates opportunities for more people and inventive ideas to be involved.
Faster turnaround times: Just think of the situation that you do not have to wait for months for your satellite to be launched! According to the company, the SSLV will take much shorter time than the conventional rockets. Boito effectively brought to satellite TV an express lane to speed up the launch of the project.
One rocket, multiple payloads: The SSLV can accommodate multiple satellites into space at equal instances. Imagine a lift-sharing service for space, it has lowered the costs of launching one individual satellite and even more so for constellations of small satellites.
Adaptable and mobile: On the opposite, the SSLV doesn’t need to launch from an enormous launch-pad site. Due to its relative simplicity it can be launched from virtually anywhere. Of course, consider it as a better launch platform, one that’s flexible as to the kind of missions it can support, much less clients.
In general, the SSLV puts ISRO at the future vanguard of the small satellite launch business. It is geared towards being a cheaper way of putting more satellites into space in a shorter span of time. This is a good omen for further space mission, research work and development of the commercial space business.
And the advantages are:
Reduced Launch Costs: Concerning SSLVs, they are supposed to be comparatively cheap enabling launching of satellites at a lower cost.
Faster Turnaround Time: Thus, SSLV is more efficient or takes less time than the large sized launch vehicles.
Flexibility for Multiple Satellites: This makes SSLV perfect to transport multiple satellites in one flight which is perfect for small satellites formation known as constellation.
Simpler Launch Infrastructure: SSLV does not heavily rely on. the amount of infrastructures required for its launch and can be launched from anywhere
Here are the Advantages of SSLV’s
1. Flexibility: SSLV can launch satellites into various orbits, including sun-synchronous, low Earth, and polar orbits.
1. Cost-effective: SSLV is designed to be a more affordable launch option for small satellites.
3. Quick turnaround: SSLV has a relatively short turnaround time between launches.
4. Dedicated launches: SSLV offers dedicated launches for small satellites, eliminating the need to share a launch vehicle with larger satellites.
5. Enhanced mission flexibility: SSLV’s modular design allows for easy integration of multiple payloads and adapters.
6. Increased launch frequency: SSLV’s compact size and mobile launch capability enable more frequent launches.
SSLV’s – Game changer for ISRO ik coming years
1. SSLVs will enable ISRO to launch small satellites (less than 500 kg) into space at a significantly lower cost and faster turnaround time.
2. SSLVs will enable ISRO to demonstrate its capabilities in developing low-cost, reliable, and efficient launch vehicles, which can be scaled up for larger missions. This will help ISRO build expertise and confidence in developing more complex launch vehicles.
3. SSLVs will also allow ISRO to tap into the growing global market for small satellite launches, which is expected to reach $1 billion by 2025. With its capabilities, ISRO can offer dedicated launches for small satellites, providing more flexibility and affordability for customers.
