The reservation system in India, which was implemented to address the historical injustices faced by marginalized communities, is still a contentious issue. While some argue that it’s necessary to maintain social equity and representation, others believe it’s no longer required or even counterproductive.
Arguments for reservation:
Arguments against reservation:
The caste-based reservation system in India was introduced way back in the early years of our country’s Independence to tackle the caste-based discrimination that was prevalent in those days. the socio-economic situation of a person had a direct correlation to their caste i.e. a person belonging to the upper caste had the upper hand economically and socially over a person from the lower caste. Hence our past leaders introduced the reservation system to provide equal opportunities for growth and development of the underprivileged. This system has proven to be beneficial in terms of uplifting a large group of them out of poverty and providing them with a better social status.
In the current scenario, the demographics of our country have shifted quite a bit. The caste discrimination has lessened a considerable amount. Now the disparity is mostly between the rich, middle class and the poor, irrespective of their caste. It is high time we do away with the age-old model of caste reservation but abolishing the reservation completely is not feasible either. Instead, the reservation system must be modified and only the financial status of people should be the focal point. only people belonging to the BPL category will be reserved and the cutoff marks in exams must be the same for everyone . This way the unfairness of the system will be taken care of and at the same time talent will be given more preference.
