The Indian Renaissance of the 19th century emerged as a response to both Western challenges and inspirations. Colonial rule exposed Indians to Western education, scientific thought, and democratic ideals, prompting a reevaluation of traditional values. Reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Swami Vivekananda integrated Western ideas with Indian culture, promoting social reform, women’s rights, and national identity. However, the encounter with the West also highlighted socio-economic disparities and cultural alienation, leading to a resurgence of indigenous pride and revivalism. Thus, the Indian Renaissance was a complex interplay of adopting beneficial Western influences while striving to reclaim and redefine Indian identity.
