The idea of maritime security is wide and includes “economic growth, human security, marine life, and national security.” India has an extensive coastline of 7,500 km, therefore safeguarding its maritime security is essential for preserving both its strategic and economic interests.

Major reasons for ensuring India’s maritime security:

1. Trade dependence: India’s maritime transport accounts for 95% of the nation’s trade volume and 65% of its trade value, hence maritime security becomes essential for continuous trade and economic stability.
2. Resource management: The marine zones of India are abundant in minerals, fisheries, and natural gas. Resource management depends on these resources being protected.
3. National security: Ensuring secure marine activities involves safeguarding against terrorism, piracy and contraband. Moreover, maintaining regional peace depends on averting maritime disputes.
4. Regional influence: India’s regional domination and geopolitical stability are strengthened by protecting its marine interests.

Significance of the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act: This Act aims to deter maritime piracy and prosecute those who commit crimes linked to it. As the Indian Navy concluded 100 days of “Operation Sankalp,” Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar praised the Maritime Anti Piracy Act, saying it has been a “great enabler” and is one of the reasons we have been successful.
