Solid waste is defined as any material that is discarded or rejected and is in solid or semi solid form . example- batteries, plastic waste ,glass waste etc .It is generated due to rapid urbanization, population growth, consumerism, inadequate waste management infrastructure, lack of awareness and inefficient practices .
India generates approximately 54 million tons of solid waste annually with only 22 to 28% being processed. The remaining 72 to 78% is dumped in landfills or open spaces. Urban India produces 0.17 million tons of municipal solid waste daily. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are among the top waste generating states , posing significant environmental concerns.
