Remote Sensing: Elements and Process
Remote Sensing is the art of gathering information on a certain body or an area from a distance. There are several components and steps involved in this process. These include the use of satellite and aerial sensors in normal practice.
Elements of Remote Sensing:
Source of Energy: Remote sensing depends on electromagnetic energy, particularly sunlight, which enlightens the object in interest and bounces the radiations back to a sensor.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere possesses some factors that may scatter other energies, absorb them, or reflect some of them and this may interfere with the data.
Target/Object: The surface or an object reflects or emits energy in particular fashion, which is then captured by sensors.
Sensor: Such devices are deployed on aircraft or satellites and such tools capture the energy radiations.
Data Processing System: The collected information is later processed so as to rectify some mistakes and make the images comprehensible.
Process of Remote Sensing:
Energy Emission: Sun or other bodies in space exude energy towards the globe.
Energy Interaction: In return, energy interacts with the Earth’s surface whereby, objects reflect or emit it depending on their properties.
Data Collection: The reflected or the apportioned emitted energy is also recorded by the sensors.
Data Transmission and Processing: Such data gets distributed to processing centers where it is analyzed.
Interpretation: Such pictures have been processed and are interpreted so that we can understand and assist in a variety of situations like environmental monitoring, mapping, and disaster management.
Remote Sensing is a technology that is used for collecting and analyzing information and examine about objects or phenomenon without making any physical contact with it. This technology used to in several kind of fields like geography, ecology, geology, hydrology, glaciology and oceanography.
However, conventionally, Remote sensing refers to the identification of earth features by detecting the characteristic electromagnetic radiation that is reflected by the earth surface.
In simply, we can say that the technology which can sense from camera or sensor without physical contact that is remote sensing.
Remote sensing uses sensors mounted on different platform to measures energy response. Sensors are either active or passive. Active sensors illuminate a target with a know energy source and measure the time, phase, intensity and other characteristics of the reflected energy. Passive sensors measure natural energy usually sunlight that is reflected or emitted form an object.
Elements of Remote sensing:
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) defines Remote sensing as the acquisition of information about the Earth’s surface through the use of sensors that are not in direct physical contact with the object or area being observed.
