A lot of times, we fail to appreciate the intricacies of our own identities. Being a woman has influenced my life in countless ways, both big and small, so much so that it’s easy to lose track of them as they play in the background. Since childhood, being a girl has shaped what I like, how I talk, what I play, how I dress. While I’d like to believe that I’ve resisted society’s prejudices and didn’t conform to them, I can’t say that with complete honesty. Even when I was “fighting” societal expectations, I was often just falling into another box that had been created for me. Yet, none of these experiences have made me resent being a woman. Instead, they’ve only strengthened my desire to be a stronger one.
In some ways, being a girl and taking on my house’s “feminine” duties has kept me connected to my roots. I know a lot about my culture that I might not have learned otherwise. Growing up, I was surrounded by strong women who were tough but not blunt, a perfect blend of rigidity and kindness, and that has shaped who I am to a great extent. Being a woman has made me realize that life isn’t always fair to us, but it has also taught me never to internalize this unfairness. I strive to do my best while being kind to the little girls around me, so they don’t grow up hating pink out of fear of being perceived as “too girly.”
An individual’s identity is often shaped by their culture and experience. Gender also plays an important role in shaping the challenges they face.
For a young woman, societal norms, ideas and stereotypes come into play. I grew up with women of modern thinking and wider perspectives. However, they still carry the societal norms engraved into them as a child and are now being passed onto me. This includes my body language, how I carry myself and the requirements of having a ‘gentle’ personality. Although, being a woman has it perks, it requires facing challenges that shape their experiences, making them mentally capable. I have faced challenges pertaining to gender bias but this experience taught me to advocate for myself.
I came to realize the injustice and instead became more aware of the problems we face and has shaped me into a strong, young woman with broader perspectives, while conducting myself in a respectable manner. Therefore, my journey as a woman has been challenging and empowering. This journey has also showed the importance of having opinions as a woman to stand up for ourselves against the injustice and criticisms we face. It taught me to embrace my identity as a woman.
