Feminism is as real as Patriarchy is.
Feminism occurred as a response to the oppression of women throughout history. It is a movement that emerged to eliminate the marginalization of women. Individuals unclear about the concept of feminism would only perceive it as ‘oppression of the males’ or ‘dominance over the male society’.
Feminism calls for gender equality based on social, political and economic rights and freedoms. It seeks to rectify the injustice that affects women disproportionately.
Being a feminist does not only pertain to just one gender. There are males and as well as females who consider themselves feminists.
Feminists work to dismantle the existence of patriarchy in society, in turn advocating a culture where everyone is free to express themselves, without the constraints of traditional, oppressive norms.
People misunderstand feminism, viewing it as ‘anti-men’. What people fail to see is that feminism is about fostering a society with equal opportunities, not claiming one gender superior to the other.
Today, feminism has evolved, addressing challenges like online harassment, representation of women in the media and promoting body positivity. In today’s modern world, feminism has played a major role in creating opportunities for women, yet patriarchy still stands dominant.
Feminism, evolving through its waves, encompasses various strands, and the limitations of few shouldn’t define the entire feminist discourse, making it fake.
Feminism essentially stood with equality and women’s rights, however some feminist took a very radical approach. This projected feminism as ‘man-hating‘ (mainly came as a response to second-wave feminism). Such an image casting can also be attributed to the patriarchal insecurity as feminism challenges its traditional gender roles.
The feminist movement has significantly impacted women’s access to public spaces, rights, and opportunities, providing a level playing field for both genders. Women’s right to education, vote, etc do not compromise men’s rights. Affirmative actions, like quotas, that are considered to put females in an advantaged position, actually uplift women from the disadvantage of not receiving the job/education seat due to social/biological constraints.
Feminism fundamentally supports gender neutrality and not female superiority. However, the misuse of feminism by some individuals to defend personal gains has contributed to its negative image.
Thus, the idea that “feminism is a fake conception” has grounds in the negative experiences of people or their patriarchal insecurity but overall, feminism is an idea standing with equality and against patriarchy.
