Societal attitudes about gender roles have experienced much evolution in the past years, with deep impacts on the opportunities and empowerment of women. Traditional gender roles that mostly condemned women to the home and limited their professional and public activity are increasingly contested and redefined. Awareness towards gender inequality, rise in the advocacy of women’s rights, and the repercussions of global movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up are some that contribute to this movement. Among these, increased acceptance of women as leaders is certainly one of the most notable changes. Women are perceived as capable and competent leaders with increasing representation in politics, business, and academia. In addition, women have been empowered to be working by being granted work policies such as flexible hours for working, parental leave, and others that allow them to join careers without omitting their responsibilities to their families. In this respect, education has taken a leading role. Now, more women are entering the domain of higher education and enrolling in fields that had previously been exclusive to men, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This educational empowerment is a means for women to break the glass ceilings and surge into success in various industries.
