‘De-notified Tribes’ stands for all those communities which were once notified under the Criminal Tribes Acts, enforced by the British Raj between l87l and I947. These Acts were repealed by the Independent lndian Government in l952, and these communities were “De-Notified”. The de-notified tribes can be found among the ST, SC and OBC tribe. Denotified Tribes (DNTs) are communities that were notified as being born criminals during the British regime under Criminal Tribes Act, 1871. These communities were denotified, after India got independence, by the Habitual Offenders Act, 1952, which repealed the Criminal Tribes Act. Several DNTs were included in ST, SC and OBC lists. As per Renke Commission, 2008, there are 198 DNTs in India.
