Culture Media – Culture media are the growth media for cells , it can be of 2 types , Natural and Artificial culture media . Culture media are very convenient for a wide range of animal cell culture as well as plant cell culture .
Natural culture Media- Natural culture media consists solely of naturally occurring biological fluids ( Plasma, Serum , amniotic fluid etc. ), Tissue extracts ( Extracts of liver, spleen), Tumor leukocytes and bone marrow extracts , Clots ( Coagulates, plasma clots ).
Artificial culture Media- Artificial culture media are prepared by adding nutrients ( both organic and inorganic ) , vitamins, Serum proteins , carbohydrates, co- factors etc.
Characteristics –
- immediate survival ( A balanced salt solution with specific pH and osmotic pressure).
- Prolonged survival (A balanced salt solution supplemented with various formulation of organic compounds or serum ).
- Specialized function
- Indefinite growth.
