Jammu and Kashmir has great geo-strategic importance due to its location and
terrain. Located in the northernmost tip of India, the region borders several
countries including Pakistan, China and Afghanistan. This location makes it an
important crossroads in South Asia, affecting the geopolitical and security
dynamics of the region. The mountains of the region, including the Himalayas,
offer both challenges and opportunities. Strategically, this provides natural
barriers that can be useful against war, but it also creates logistical challenges for
military operations. Historical and ongoing political conflicts over its sovereignty
and autonomy further enhance its importance on the international stage,
indicating regional stability and continued global power. Overall, Jammu and
Kashmir’s geographical importance stems from its location between major
powers, its natural security and cultural and political challenges, making it a key
geographical location in South Asia the broader politics.
In recent times one more geo-strategic importance of Jammu and Kashmir is that
China’s CPEC (China Pakistan Economic Corridor) through which China is
going to increase its trade in South-Asia. From this viewpoint J&K’s significance
is more to tackle China’s reach in South -Asia in many conditions.
