Every book in the world of literature has been given a unique name that forms a meaning to the protagonist in the story. A title that captivates the readers to pick up the book and read. ‘The Awakening’ by Kate Chopin, the title itself represents liberation, self-discovery, the awakening of desires and passions in the characters as well as the protagonist. But only after a careful read one can really tell what the plot is really about. As the story centers the main character Edna Pontellier who at first learns how to express herself through her artwork and that is the first awakening in the book. Expressing yourself. Edna’s sexual awakening in formed through her relationship with a supporting character Robert LeBrun who didn’t have any intention of a affair with her as the man in the Victorian era had no desire of destroying families. Which results to Edna’s suicide at the end of the story and is the final awakening that symbolizes liberation and independence. The title ‘The Awakening’ represents so much more than just one line summary but in order to know all of it one has to read the book thoroughly.
