Art is definitely a powerful tool that brings about change. It is like a key that can unlock a closed door to reveal what is inside. Similarly, art too has the power to open our minds to new and innovative ideas, emotions and perceptions.
Time and again we have witnessed art being used as a medium to express, revolutionize and inspire people. It often acts as a mirror to the true socio-political realities of our world. It allows people to connect from all the way across the world and makes us more aware about the atrocities faced by those being subjugated. It offers those in distress a beacon of hope by allowing them to dream and talk about an alternative society. This particularly is one of the most powerful elements of art as it encourages people to fight for change and stand up for a world that they dream of. My most favourite example is a song called Baraye, which is now the anthem of freedom for Iran. This song from all the way across the world not only presents to us the brutal reality of Iran but also voices our own frustrations and dreams. We connect to it and empathize to millions of Iranians, urging the decision makers to bring about a long due change. This also reminds me of Auden who quotes in his poem that poetry is, “A way of happening, a mouth.”.
