RTE  refers to “Right To Education” which means building block for every child to get a quality elementary education. Education describes as a key to all locked door of unknown . RTE implemented in India in 2009 under article 21-A to provide compulsory education for SC/STs , socially backward class and differently abled.

Important provisions of RTE act 2009 :

• Right of children to receive free and mandatory education aged between 6 to 14 years in a nearby school.
• All schools must be established standard and norms related with pupil teacher ratio (PTR),school-teacher working hours and infrastructure of buildings.
• Appointment of appropriate teachers who should pass the Teacher Eligibility Test.
• Responsibility of schools like providing free and compulsory education, prohibition of teachers from giving private tuitions, constitution of school management committee which keep track of  school’s utilization of government  grants.

Impact of RTE act 2009 in education in India :

since its implementation, RTE act makes an impression on India’s education landscape that make it a powerful tool for ensuring universal access to education.

• Unlock doors for all : every child must be admitted to school and schools cannot deny admission to children based on financial status, caste, religion or any other discriminatory factors.
• Increased Enrollment : The act has a managed to improve enrollment of children successfully in upper primary level particularly among girls and marginalized community. Students also secured admissions under 25% quota norm.
• Infrastructure norms : one of the major issue in schools are lack of adequate infrastructure. The norms under this act includes teacher student ratio of 1:30, clean drinking water, good playground and ramps for children with disabilities.

RTE act 2009 undoubtedly been a gamechanger for India’s education landscape but there are some limitations and challenges remain in terms of teacher shortages which affect teacher pupil ratio, no focus on quality of learning, children below the age of 6 years are not covered in this act and so on. However, by working together we can bridge this gap and create a beautiful environment for each and every child to get their quality education and create a better world for present and future generations.
