India’s first Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) has been established. These objectives and their implications are as follows:
Objectives:
Data Repository: IBDC will act as a repository of biological data such as genomic, proteomic and other biological research data.
Data Management: To offer efficient data management services, including storage, annotation and sharing of biological data generated by the Indian researchers and institutions.
Data Accessibility: The aim is to make sure that the bio data is made accessible not only to India but also to other parts of the world so that collaborative researches can be done.
Data Security: A number of stringent measures for ensuring the safety and integrity of sensitive biological information would be put in place.
Support Research and Innovation: This will involve providing computational resources, tools and expertise required for bioinformatics analysis in order to support research and innovation.
Significance:
Boost to Genomic Research: By centralizing large scale biological data storage and analysis, it will greatly boost genomic research at IBDC.
Enhanced Collaboration: This facilitates pooling together of information by researchers all over the country which fasten scientific discoveries.
