The emergence of Sociology can be traced formally to the 19th century. Still, it has been evident that it existed far before that, as many thinkers have tried to understand society in ways that sociology did even before the 19th century. However, a few factors can be listed as significant changes that helped in the emergence of sociology as a discipline. These could be discussed as a set of events that helped in the development of sociology, like any other discipline.
- First of all, the Enlightenment in the 18th century is known to be the beginning of the establishment of intellectual groups and gave a platform for rational and scientific debates.
- Revolutions have played a significant role in the emergence of sociology, including the French Revolution. This revolution’s importance could be traced to the social changes it created, such as the rearrangement of the social order and the reanalysing of the power structure among the people in authority.
- The socio-economic changes such as the Industrial Revolution that took place towards the end of the 18th and at the beginning of the 19th century made it important to look further into the social changes taking place in society as these rapid changes were giving a platform for the rise of several problems. One such change that could be seen shortly after this revolution was urbanisation, which had its own impacts and further strengthened the phenomena such as poverty and the establishment of new social classes and communities that needed to be studied.
- The prominent thinkers provided some of the most significant works that helped popularise sociology as a discipline. Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim could be listed as a few of them. Auguste Comte coined the term sociology, whereas the other three came to be known as the founding fathers of Sociology.
- At last, while talking about the emergence of sociology as a discipline, it is essential to discuss the different branches of sociology, such as the emergence of urban sociology in the Chicago School and the work of famous sociologists such as Louis Worth, William F. Whyte, Robert K. Merton and Robert E. Park.
