Crop science, also known as agronomy, is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the cultivation and management of crops to ensure food security, sustainability, and environmental protection. The main areas of focus in crop science include:

1. Crop breeding and genetics: Developing new crop varieties with desirable traits such as improved yields, disease resistance, and climate resilience.
2. Crop physiology and ecology: Understanding the physiological and ecological processes that govern crop growth and development, including factors such as photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient uptake.
3. Soil science: Studying the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils and their impact on crop growth and nutrient cycling.
4. Irrigation and water management: Developing efficient irrigation systems and water management strategies to optimize crop water use and reduce waste.

The concept of AI taking over humans is a popular topic of discussion and speculation. While AI has made significant advancements in recent years, it’s essential to separate fact from fiction and understand the actual possibilities and risks.

AI has made tremendous progress in various domains, such as:

1. Machine Learning: AI can learn from data and improve its performance over time.
2. Natural Language Processing (NLP): AI can understand and generate human language, enabling applications like chatbots, voice assistants, and language translation.
3. Computer Vision: AI can recognize and interpret visual data, used in applications like self-driving cars, facial recognition, and medical imaging.

However, AI still faces limitations and challenges:

1. Lack of common sense: AI systems lack human-like common sense and intuition.
2. Data quality: AI’s performance is often limited by the quality of the data it’s trained on.
3. Explainability: AI decision-making processes are not always transparent or explainable.

Potential Risks and Concerns:

1. Job displacement: AI could potentially displace human workers in certain industries, leading to unemployment and social unrest.
2. Biased decision-making: AI systems can perpetuate biases present in their training data, leading to unfair outcomes.
3. Security risks: AI-powered systems can be vulnerable to cyber attacks and hacking.
4. Dependence on infrastructure: AI relies on complex infrastructure, which could be compromised or disrupted.

Pipelines are the most convenient and suitable mode of transportation for petroleum products and gases in bulk for longer distances. Transportation by pipelines is a rising development being preferred nowadays for cost-effective projects in the various fields.
Advantages of pipeline transportation

• Energy efficient: Pipelines consume very little energy in comparison to other modes of transportation. Further, the transit losses are minimal in transportation through pipelines.
• Economical construction and maintenance: They have low energy consumption and low maintenance costs. Additionally, they can be built in difficult terrains, under water etc. The running cost of the materials through pipelines is very low. It is 10 times less than surface transportation.
• Transportation of solid materials and future prospects: Nowadays solid minerals are being transported through pipelines too, cutting down on operating and transportation costs considerably. Example: Iron ore in the form of slurry from Kudremukh to Mangalore port, Rock phosphate from Malton mines to Debari smelter plant in Udaipur etc.
• Reduction in accidental charges: Pipelines are safe, relatively accident-free and environmentally friendly.
• Reduces regional disparity: The far inland location of refineries like Barauni, Mathura, Karnal and gas based fertiliser plants at Jagdishpur and other places could be thought of only because of pipelines.

Disadvantages of pipeline transportation

• High initial costs and inability to increase capacity once the pipeline is laid.
• Pipelines are prone to distortions in case of earthquakes. It is very difficult to find leakages and cracks in case of distortions.
• Pipelines face security threats from terrorist organizations, especially in the case of transboundary pipeline like the TAPI pipeline.

As of August, 2022, India had more than 10,000 kms of crude pipeline network, with a capacity of around 147.9 MMTPA. Following are some of the important pipelines in India.

• Naharkatia-Nunmati-Barauni Pipeline: It was the first pipeline constructed in India to bring crude oil from Naharkatia oil field to Nunmati. It has a number of subsidiary pipelines like Nunmati-Siliguri pipeline, Lakwa-Rudrasagar-Barauni pipeline, Barauni-Haldia pipeline, Barauni-Kanpur pipeline etc.
• Mumbai High-Mumbai pipeline: It is a double- pipeline that connects Mumbai with Mumbai High providing facilities for transporting crude oil and natural gas.
• Ankleshwar-Kayoli Pipeline: It transports crude oil from Ankleshwar oilfield to Koyali refinery.
• Salaya-Koyali-Mathura Pipeline: An important pipeline has been laid from Salaya in Gujarat to Mathura in U.P. via Viramgram which supplies crude oil to refineries at Koyali and Mathura.
• Mathura-Delhi Panipat- Ambala-Jalandhar pipeline: It transports refined products Mathura & of Panipat refineries to market centers of N.W. India.
• Haldia-Kolkata pipeline:It transports refined petroleum products to Kolkata.
• Hazira-Bijaypur-Jagdishpur gas pipeline: This is the longest gas pipeline of India that has brought about a big transformation in the economy of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
• Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline: It is the longest LPG pipeline in the world. It is the first time that a cross-country pipeline has been used to transport LPG adding to the availability of supplies, safety in transportation, and wider distribution etc.

Transportation by pipelines is a new development in India. Pipelines have relieved the increasing pressure on the existing surface transport system and can go a long way as the future of transportation of essential materials, especially as India is intending to move towards a gas-based economy. A robust and efficient policy for the same will not only ensure this, but also help in the overall economic growth of the country.

Internationalization of the rupee is a process that involves increasing use of the local currency in cross-border transactions. As far as the rupee is concerned, it is fully convertible in the current account, but partially in the capital account. There is a need to push the rupee much farther to get an international tag as it accounts for a mere 1.7% of global foreign exchange market turnover as compared to 88.3% of dollar, followed by the euro, Japanese Yen and Pound Sterling.

Advantages of Internationalisation of Rupee

• Mitigates currency risk: Use of rupee in cross-border transactions mitigates currency risk for Indian business. Protection from currency volatility not only reduces cost of doing business, it also enables better growth of business globally.
• Less vulnerable to external shocks: Reducing dependence on foreign currency makes India less vulnerable to external shocks. For example, during phases of monetary tightening in the US and strengthening dollar, excessive foreign currency liabilities of domestic business results in a de facto domestic tightening such as during the “Taper tantrum’ episode of 2013.
• Reduces need for holding foreign exchange reserves: While reserves help manage exchange rate volatility and project external stability, they impose a cost on the economy. This cost represents a transfer of income from India to Advanced Economies. Reducing the requirement of reserves would save some of this loss of income.
• Improve bargaining power: As the use of Rupee becomes significant, the bargaining power of Indian business would improve adding weight to the Indian economy, enhancing India’s global stature and respect.

However, internationalisation of rupee is not devoid of risks, highlighted as follows:

• Impact on monetary policy: Internationalisation can potentially limit the ability of the central bank to control domestic money supply and influence interest rates as per domestic macroeconomic conditions. Thus, macroeconomic policy would need to measure up to such risks.
• Dependence on foreign capital for growth: If a substantial portion of its trade is in Rupee, non- residents would hold Rupee balances in India, which would be used to acquire Indian assets. Such large holdings could heighten vulnerability to external shocks, managing which would necessitate more effective policy tools.
• Reduce reserve accretion: A reduced role for convertible currencies in external transactions could lead to reduced reserve accretion.
• The outflow of Hot money: Complete internationalization of currency will expand the risk of hot currency (highly prone to sudden outflows) to capital assets. For instance, a global risk-off phase could lead non-residents to convert their Rupee holdings and move out of India.

These risks are unavoidable if India progresses to be an economic superpower. We need to calibrate our moves to the evolving size of our economy as internationalisation would make domestic monetary policy more challenging but the alternative of compromising on growth by playing it safe is clearly not an optimal choice.

In urban infrastructure, stakeholders from different economic sectors are involved including real estate, knowledge economy sectors etc. There is a multiplicity and sometimes, divergence of interests. Hence, there emerges a need for collaboration of public and private sectors to address the common misalignment between them in the following ways:

• Investment requirements: Significant initial public subsidies might help kick-start the development. But long-term budget commitments – spanning over potentially different political mandates – may ultimately become a threat to the full delivery of the project and raise risks. Thereby, there is requirement of mobilisation of additional private capital.
• Convergence of different interests: Usually the public sector has some clear interests in developing, urbanising, regenerating, or optimising profits from either derelict or underperforming sites and brownfield areas. At the same time, for the private sector it means unlocking of new jobs and new investment opportunities in real estate and the possibility of associated investments in the local economy.
• Reduced risks: Risk allocation between partners needs to be at the heart of any collaboration between the public and private sector. While the government needs to take care of policy continuity, security of private investment, predictable timeframe of regulatory processes etc., the private sector undertakes socially comfortable cost recovery pricing of services and bears operational and constructional risk.
• Sharing of responsibility: While the government can bear the administrative and transactional cost of managing a collaborative project and wading through the complex bureaucratic procedures, the private sector can bring in efficiency gains from improved project delivery, operation and management, and access to advanced technology.
• Increase in rewards: Properly executed planning and development of a project also allows better screening of options, and helps in deciding appropriate project structure and choice of technology considering cost over the whole life cycle of the project. This expertise of the private sector provides relief to the public sector from the burden of the costs of design and construction.
• Complementary objectives: Stakeholders from business sectors require the levelling of knowledge gap regarding dynamics, pace and plurality of assets while the public sector seeks opportunities to create economic growth, boost innovation, tap into new technologies and invest in the future of the region.

Smart city solutions have emerged as a way forward to enable the convergence of stakeholders’ interests and to facilitate cooperation between investors for a more efficient and transparent use of resources and capital. The public sector may contribute by delivering the initial infrastructure rather than subsidising the development in later stages. Binding land use regulations should be set by the public sector from the early planning stages to ensure a wider shared value is delivered to the local community. Special public agencies or a department of local government could oversee relations with the developer over time. Some cities have successfully implemented public-private collaboration in wastewater management e.g. Alundur, Bangalore, Salt Lake (Kolkata) etc. as well as in urban road projects such as Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link Project, IT corridor project in Chennai, Hyderabad Outer ring road, Delhi- Gurgaon Expressway etc.
