Irrigation
The supply of water from rivers, tanks, wells, and canals to agricultural lands for cultivation is called irrigation. It is useful in both areas of low rainfall and heavy rainfall. Thus, irrigation refers to the artificial supply of water for cultivation.
Types of Irrigation
The different types irrigation systems used in India include:
Surface Irrigation: Surface irrigation is the type of irrigation where water is applied and distributed over the soil surface by gravity.
Localized Irrigation: In this system, water is applied to each plant through a network of pipes under low pressure.
Sprinkler Irrigation: This system of irrigation is more useful for uneven dry lands. In this system, a network of pipes with rotating nozzles on their tops is connected to a main pipe. When water is pumped into the main pipe, it comes out of the rotating nozzles with pressure in all directions.
Drip Irrigation: In this type of irrigation, P.V.C. pipes carry the available water to feed each plant at its root with the required quantity of water drop by drop.
Manual Irrigation: In this method, water is scattered evenly around the field with the help of manual power “such as laborers and watering cans.”
