The different types of irrigation systems practiced in India are as follows :
1. Surface Irrigation – It is the oldest type practice of irrigation in India . Surface irrigation refers to the use of flowing water from natural or manmade sources and it doesn’t involve the use of pumps .
2. Localized Irrigation – In this type of irrigation , the water is transported to the crops in a well planned water pipe system that goes straight to the crops .
3. Sprinkler Irrigation – Also known as overhead irrigation . As the name suggests , sprinkler irrigation is such that a small hose connected to a water pipe is used and sprinkles a particular area up to a certain distance in the field .
4. Drip Irrigation – Drip irrigation is one of the most useful and efficient water saving types of irrigation in India . In this , the water is provided to the roots of the crop , drop by drop .
5. Manual Irrigation – Manual irrigation as it suggests by the name , is a highly labour intensive and time – consuming irrigation system in India . It involves manually watering the crops using hoses , nozzles , and pipes . It can save many amounts of water but requires more time .
