Yes there is a moral to James Joyce’s story “Araby”. It is about a young boy who is infatuated with a friend of his, Mangan’s sister, and goes to the Araby bazaar in order to buy her something. When he gets there he finds the place empty and left with nothing but regret knowing that he has wasted his time. The moral of this short story would be not to have high expectations.
The disillusionment of the protagonist from his idealism.- This story highlights the gap between romantic dreams and reality of life. The perils of having unrealistic expectations. The boy’s heightened expectation leads to disappointment and realization.
The self awareness is the key: The story wants us to see the difference between our idealized vision and what the world really is.
On the whole, Araby warns against placing too much stock in romantic dreams of any kind, and encourages us to face reality — as disappointing as that sometimes may be.
