India’s Nuclear Energy Programme began in the 1940s, with a focus on harnessing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The country established the Atomic Energy Commission in 1948, marking the formal start of its nuclear journey. India’s nuclear policy has been driven by the dual objectives of energy security and technological advancement.

The first significant milestone was the establishment of the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1954, which played a crucial role in developing nuclear technology and conducting research. India’s first nuclear reactor, Apsara, went critical in 1956, paving the way for further developments.

In 1974, India conducted its first nuclear test, codenamed “Smiling Buddha,” which showcased its capability to produce nuclear weapons. This was followed by a series of tests in 1998, solidifying India’s status as a nuclear power. However, India maintains a “no first use” policy and advocates for nuclear disarmament.

Today, India operates several nuclear power plants that contribute significantly to its energy mix, aiming for a target of 25% of energy from nuclear sources by 2050. The country also collaborates internationally, joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in 2008, to enhance its access to nuclear technology while ensuring safety and non-proliferation. India’s nuclear energy programme is a testament to its commitment to sustainable development and energy independence.
