The target satellite was launched into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 282 kilometers on January 24, 2019. The test was conducted in the lower atmosphere to minimize space debris, which would decay and fall back to Earth within weeks.
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DR DO) launched a missile from the ground to hit and destroy a satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO). The missile used was the Prithvi Delivery Vehicle Mark-II (PD V MK-II), a modified anti-ballistic missile interceptor.
