E-governance uses information and communication technology to provide smart, quick, transparent and accountable governance. According to ministry of electronics and information technology the national e-governance plan’s goal is to integrate all e-governance initiatives. Following are the ways the government can make e governance more accessible
1) The digital divide:
Despite the digital India mission which was launched in 2015, there has been a huge digital divide between not only people from rural areas but also there is a digital divide due to gender disparity as well. Following are the ways to deal with that
a) Make smart phones more accessible
b) spread awareness about advantages of all government’s e-governance initiatives for eg: digilocker, end to end computerization of targeted PDS system
2) Improve cybersecurity:
There is still a lot of distrust among the masses when it comes to the world of digitalization and cases like the leak of data of AIIMS don’t help. Government should work on cybersecurity and try to win over the trust of people through spreading awareness.
3) Lack of infrastructure:
Many people from hinterland face a problem, despite having a smartphone they don’t have access to the Internet due to lack of telecommunication infrastructure.
4) Digital Literacy:
Only 38% of households in India are digitally literate. Running campaigns and providing basic computer knowledge at primary school levels can go a long way to help with this.
5) digital inclusion of people with disabilities:
With rapid digitalization of everything reaching all corners of inclusivity becomes very important so that they can have equal employment opportunities. Providing voice accessiblity on various digital platforms, voice assistance for visually challenged people, using eye as a biometric instead of thumb for handicapped people.
6) linguistic accessiblity:
See lessIndia being a land of many languages, One cap fits all approach will not do India a lof of favours if we want to make e-governance inclusive. We need to give people options of languages. For example Google provides an option to change to any language beside English to make its browser more accessible.
