The Indian constitution has unique features, even though most of its provisions have been borrowed from other constitutions around the world. Initially, the Indian Constitution had 395 articles and 8 schedules, but because of its dynamic nature, it now has a total of 448 articles and 12 schedules after going through 104 amendments. Hence, it is the lengthiest of all the written constitutions in the world.

Some of the salient features of the Indian Constitution are as follows:

1. Federal system: The Indian constitution is a written constitution that has supremacy of the constitution, an independent judiciary, a division of power, and bicameralism.
2. Parliamentary form of government: The Indian Constitution opted for a British parliamentary form of government with features like majority party rule, nominal and real executives, collective responsibility of the executive to the legislature, etc.
3. Blend of rigidity and flexibility: In Article 368, some provisions require a special majority for amendment, while others can be amended by a simple majority. Therefore, making it rigid and flexible at the same time.
4. Fundamental rights: Part III guarantees six fundamental rights to all Indian citizens that are justiciable in nature.
5. Directive Principles of State Policy: Part IV deals with the directive principles that seek to establish a ‘welfare state’ in India.
6. Emergency Provisions: Articles 352, 365, and 360 deal with national, state, and financial emergencies, respectively. These are there to safeguard the sovereignty, unity, integrity, and security of India.

Other features of the Indian Constitution are fundamental duties, a secular state, universal adult franchise, an integrated and independent judiciary, a three-tiered government, cooperative societies, etc.
